I was reading an article on CNN's website
"Why the Black Travel movement has taken off" and wondered if there was such a thing as a Black Travel Movement.
Maybe there is in America, in Europe Black people have been travelling for years, if only to go back home and see their family.
Yes, most black people in Europe have been on an airplane, have experienced taking off and landing. For those who have not taken a plane, most black people in Europe have travelled and are travelling abroad on a regular basis, more than Black American I suppose.
However, I really could identify when the article got to 'Evita Robinson adds: "There is a sense of awareness that's heightened when [people of color] travel. How we may be perceived is different [from how other people are perceived].'
Any black person having travelled to South America, Asia, Eastern Europe, Russia knows that is the case. We are perceived differently than other non-black travellers.
Sometimes it is funny, some other times it's irritating and after a while it's a real pain.
She goes on saying "There is a sense of responsibility we walk with -- wanting to represent. I'm more conscious of my behavior when I travel." I'm not sure that people want to represent, they just want to be seen for themselves and left alone.
What is your worst travel experience?
